Members of our community housed and unhoused will gather together for a Solidarity Sleep Out on August 31st, at 8:00 pm at Barrie City Hall.

This event will take place immediately after our International Overdose Awareness Day Vigil of Hope and Remembrance.

You are invited to bring a tent and spend the night sleeping out in solidarity with your neighbours, housed and unhoused, or bring a chair and spend a few hours sitting in solidarity with us.

We are gathering together to show strength and solidarity, and to stand united with our unsheltered neighbours and friends.

We are gathering at City Hall to send a strong message to Mayor Nuttall, Council, and those encouraging hate and division in our community that they we won't allow them to divide us. There is no Us vs Them, there is only US and we are stronger together!

We are gathering together to remind Mayor Nuttall that Barrie's unsheltered residents do not lose their human rights because they don't have a home. That they are protected under Section 7 of the Charter Of Rights and Freedoms. And to remind him any action to dismantle encampments and displace encampment residents would be in violation of the law. His 'Strong Mayor ' powers do not give him authority to ignore the highest law of our land or to ignore the ruling of the Ontario Superior Court.

We are gathering to show the strenght of community. To show that love is stronger than hate. We will always show up to support and protect each other. Community is the most powerful form of rebellion! Encampments are community! They provide safety, security, friendship, family... and so much more.

We are gathering to hold all levels of government to account, to call on them to take meaningful action to address the growing housing and homelessness crisis. We are calling on them to begin implementing the recommendations of The Federal Housing Advocate's Final Report including an end to forced evictions of encampments. The Federal Housing Advocate calls on the federal government to establish a National Encampments Response plan by August 31, 2024.

"It is in the shelter of each other that people live." - Irish Proverb

This is a community solidarity event organized by caring residents of Barrie, housed and unhoused, working together for a kinder, more just community and world.
